Demontrice Bigham - Founder & Executive Director

Demontrice Bigham is the visionary founder and Executive Director of the Alain Locke Initiative. With a passion for education, advocacy, and leadership development, Demontrice has spent over a decade working in the nonprofit and human services sector, ensuring that marginalized communities have access to resources, mentorship, and professional growth opportunities.

A graduate of Eastern Washington University, Demontrice earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology before continuing his academic journey at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, where he obtained a Master of Divinity degree. Committed to lifelong learning and the advancement of higher education, Demontrice is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Higher Education Administration.

Throughout his career, Demontrice has served as a Director of Housing and Residence Life, resident services manager, and residential counselor, working with individuals facing chronic homelessness, mental health challenges, and substance use disorders. Demontrice is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, and The Royal House of LaBeija.

Demontrice founded the Alain Locke Initiative out of a deep commitment to mentorship, professional development, and fostering safe spaces where young Black LGBTQ+ men can thrive. Under his leadership, the initiative continues to grow, providing scholarships, career pathways, and community engagement opportunities that help young leaders live in their truth and reach their full potential.

Jermell Witherspoon - Development Director & Chairman of the Board

Jermell Witherspoon serves as the Development Director for the Alain Locke Initiative, where he leads fundraising efforts, cultivates strategic partnerships, and ensures the financial sustainability of the organization’s mission. A passionate advocate for mentorship, education, and social impact, Jermell is committed to empowering young Black queer men by expanding access to resources, scholarships, and professional development opportunities.

Jermell is a graduate of Alabama State University, where he developed a strong foundation in leadership, community engagement, and advocacy. His passion for ministry and social justice led him to pursue further education at Seattle University School of Theology, earning the Master of Pastoral Studies degree. He is the Senior Pastor of Liberation United Church of Christ of Seattle, WA, and the Executive Director of AllianceQ.

With extensive experience in nonprofit development, event planning, and donor relations, Jermell has played a pivotal role in securing funding and fostering community support for mission-driven organizations. His leadership was instrumental in organizing the First Annual Alain Locke Initiative Gala, a milestone event that set the stage for the Initiative’s long-term impact.
